What Happens In This House, Stays In This House
Have you ever heard that line? My mother used to say it all the time! It meant that whatever happened in our house was our business, not to be shared with anyone outside of our home. It was implied that we wouldn’t acknowledge it within our house either. I had no idea, at the time, that this 3-second phrase would sum up so much of my life experience.
My name is Dominique Lamb and I am author of the upcoming book, What Happens In This House. When I started writing my book, I intended to write about domestic abuse and contrast it with healthy relationships. Even though I am a survivor of domestic abuse, I didn’t want the book to be about my experience. I wanted to give people the information and the education they need to recognize and pursue healthy relationships. When I worked for domestic violence organizations, my training and education in domestic abuse changed my life. But writing the book became a much more therapeutic process than I thought it would be and I had no choice but to detail my experience throughout the book, in order for readers to better relate to the real events I’m describing. So, What Happens In This House has morphed into a memoir-esque account of my relationships and how I gained the wisdom to not only recognize the signs of an abusive relationship but also to build and maintain a healthy one.
So, here I am, blogging about my book. It’s going to be released this Fall (check the website for details). I plan to use this little corner of the internet to share more about the book, comment on current events and just foster more dialogue (and solutions) for this issue. We all know What Happens so let’s do something about it.
